How to choose

7 white water rafting options on the Giffre river, from 35 € to 45 €, with sessions running between 1h and a full day. The lineup splits cleanly into three groups. Beginners go straight for the classic rafting descent with Altitude Rafting at 35 €, the only "Everybody welcome" option on the list. The middle tier, priced at 37 €,43 €, covers canoe-rafting, canoraft and air boat formats at an "Occasionally sporty" level, giving you more craft variety for roughly the same commitment. At 45 €, the mini-rafting with Altitude Rafting steps up to "Sporty", the highest physical rating available here. Both operators, Altitude Rafting and Nunayak Rafting, meet you in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. Pick by physical level first, then by format: if you want a standard raft, go low-end of the range; if you want something more technical or a different craft, spend the extra 8 €,10 €.

Frequently asked questions

Which session is the most intense on the Giffre?

The mini-rafting descent at 45 € with Altitude Rafting is the only tour rated "Sporty", the highest physical level across all 7 options. It runs for 2h on the Giffre, which means sustained effort throughout, not just a few rapids.

Do you need previous rafting experience to join?

No. The classic rafting descent at 35 € is rated "Everybody welcome", meaning zero experience required. The other tours are rated "Occasionally sporty", which means occasional effort but nothing technical. Only the mini-rafting asks for more sustained fitness.

What is the difference between rafting, canoe-rafting, canoraft and airboat?

A standard raft fits a full group and is guided by a paddle instructor. Canoe-rafting and canoraft put you in smaller inflatable canoes on the same river, giving you more direct contact with the current. An airboat (also listed as "air boat") is a self-bailing inflatable craft where everyone paddles individually. Same Giffre river, different craft, different sensation.

When is the best time to raft the Giffre?

The season runs from May to September. The Giffre is glacier-fed, so water levels are highest in late spring and early summer when snowmelt is at its peak, giving you stronger rapids. July and August bring more stable weather but book well in advance, these slots fill fast.

Is the Giffre river suitable for families with children?

The entry-level rafting descent at 35 € accepts everyone, which typically includes children above a minimum age set by the operator. Check directly with Altitude Rafting before booking if you have young children, as age and weight minimums vary by craft type.

Are the sessions guided in English?

Altitude Rafting conducts sessions in both French and English across all their tours. Nunayak Rafting operates in French only, so if English guidance matters to you, book with Altitude Rafting.
