Frequently asked questions

What's the most intense moment in a canyoning session near Porto?

Rappelling down a waterfall face is consistently the peak moment. You're controlling your descent on a rope while water rushes over you, which hits differently than a standard jump.

Do you need to be afraid of heights to enjoy canyoning?

A reasonable wariness is normal and manageable. Guides control the pace of each abseil, so you move when you're ready. None of the 6 tours near Porto require prior experience with heights.

What's the difference between the Arouca Geopark canyon and the Rio de Frades route?

The Arouca Geopark route is a 4h session open to all fitness levels. The Rio de Frades is a full day private descent rated for occasionally sporty participants, meaning more sustained physical effort over a longer stretch of canyon.

Can complete beginners handle the 55 € tour?

Yes. Wild IT lists the Arouca Geopark tour as 'Everybody welcome', which means no prior canyoning experience is required. The guides adapt to the group's pace.

Is canyoning near Porto available year-round?

The season runs May through September. Water levels and temperatures are most favourable in that window. Outside those months, tours are generally not offered.

Equipment

Wear a swimsuit under your wetsuit and bring a change of dry clothes for after. All tours supply technical gear, but closed toe shoes with grip (old trainers work) are strongly recommended, especially for the full day Rio de Frades route where terrain is more sustained.

Getting there

For the Wild IT tour, the meeting point is confirmed directly with the instructor after booking. For the Detours Porto excursion, pick up is at your accommodation in Porto.
